It can be overwhelming to contemplate decorating your home. It’s often the case that you know what style you like, but are unsure as to how to get started.  For those who appreciate the look of modern furniture, a great place to start is with a bertoia chair or even the bertoia stool.

Harry Bertoia invented the bertoia chair, and he was one of the most legendary bertoia stool designers of the mid-century period. Bertoia’s signature creation was the Diamond chair, which he invented in the 1950’s.  Of this chair he said, “If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them.” The chair’s look is achieved with molded lattice work of welded steel, part of a five piece collection from the Knoll company.

Bertoia was, in addition to being a furniture designer, but also a university lecturer and a sculptor.   This unique combination of talents probably had a big influence on his design thinking.  Being able to integrate knowledge and design makes for stunning result.   Bertoia was most comfortable working with metal, and from this starting point, he was able to re-imagine chair design and modern furniture design.

The bertoia chair is, without a doubt, a major aspect of today’s modern furniture. Bertoia’s experimentation with the bending of metal rods produced a chair that also functioned as a piece of practical art. The undefined stool is another modern furniture piece in this distinctive design collection. The genius of the design is that it is “classically modern”, appearing modern, but a 60 year old design.  The look is a signature mid-century creation, but it remains very popular even today.

Modern furniture design is generally thougt of as clean, sophisticated, and simple. If you think that you would love the clean modern look, you can begin by integrating pieces into whatever you currently have in your room. Perhaps you should consider starting with one room, to keep the budget reasonable. Of course, even redesigning one room can put a big dent in your budget if you are not careful!   Try adding modern pieces one by one, keeping in mind your goals and your budget.   By starting with a simple, but eye-catching bertoia chair or bertoia stool, you can begin to overhaul the look you have now, and eventually add even more pieces to complete a fabulous new look.
